Richard J. Lee Elementary

Location: Coppell, Texas

Project Architect: Stantec Architecture

Sustainable Programs: USGBC Leed – Certified GOLD

Lee Elementary School’s design incorporates environmentally friendly elements, adding them as teaching tools. Instead of traditional classrooms, grades are placed into small learning communities organized around a central collaboration space. In each community, break out spaces help balance group and individualized learning. An outdoor learning lab and classroom add to the list of flexible learning environments.

This net zero-ready facility (the first net zero school design in Texas) integrates principals of sustainability directly into the curriculum. Students learn core concepts using on-site solar and wind power, geothermal energy, natural day lighting, and rainwater collection. Digital, interactive displays of the building’s energy and water usage show students how the systems are performing. An outdoor lab includes experiment tables and planter boxes for gardening.

More, there’s an eco-pond, rainwater collection cistern, native gardening, a human sun dial, butterfly garden, and solar panel learning station. This facility sparks imagination and excites the learning process at every turn.
