Seattle Children’s Hospital – Bill and Melinda Gates Ambulatory Center

Location: Seattle, Washington

Project Architect: HKS Architects

Talley Associates was responsible for delivering an overall site design compatible with the surrounding residential neighborhood. In addition, the landscape architect was charged with creating a memorable and user-friendly campus arrival on the very tight urban campus and a major courtyard space adjacent to the ambulatory care center. Talley Associates utilized landscape terraces, gracious cascading stairways and pedestrian friendly pathways leading from surrounding garages to the patient building. It is a sequential exploration to reach the main arrival which is the garden space from which one enters the building.

A linear garden space separating the ambulatory care building from a four-story parking structure is an important design feature. The plantings create a buffer at the edge of the parking structure. A terrace plaza, featuring minimalist bamboo plantings, accents a floating glass wall. Great care was taken to preserve the heavily forested area along the edge of the site, adjacent to the neighborhood.
