Mahekal Beach Resort

Location: Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Project Architect: Three Architecture

Nestled between the dense Riviera Maya jungle and Playa del Carmen’s longest stretch of beach lies Mahekal Beach Resort. The completely new hotel concept fuses quiet, modern luxury with the look and feel of Mexico’s traditional past, affording guests a luxurious oasis of sophistication and comfort within a tropical paradise. The major overhaul of the site’s landscape placed priority on preserving the integrity of the existing jungle aesthetic. To enhance guest experience throughout, Talley Associates integrated a planting scheme. Indigenous planting materials were layered across the property, including the beaches and a village of 196 thatched-roof palapas – giving the resort a communal aspect with a nod to its heritage.

Hand-laid, hidden stone pathways lead guests to their palapa-style bungalows. Weaved together by lush tropical gardens, bungalows were designed to bring the outside in, as artisanal blue ceramic sinks evoke thoughts of the Caribbean ocean steps from guests’ front door.
